You’ve likely seen the signs, heard the radio PSAs, or seen the TV PSAs. They all promote getting vaccinated for the flu virus. In 2011, one of Santa Clarita’s City council members even wrote a column in The Signal urging residents to get the flu shot at the annual clinic at College of the Canyons.

Flu vaccinations have become a big market and they are expected to grow to $3.8 billion by 2017, according to GBI Research.
But… is the flu vaccine really the best choice for you? Be sure that you obtain all your facts before you decide.
When we get sick, our body has some natural down time; our immune system is actually strengthened; and we have a chance to connect our mind, body and spirit.

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimate flu-associated deaths range from 3,000 to 49,000 people between 1976-2007. The Center admits the numbers are misleading because it groups together influenza and pneumonia—and its website lists multiple reasons why it has to estimate the number of seasonal flu-related deaths. (

In further understanding how to stay healthy, you should also take a look at a few of the toxic ingredients in the 2013-2014 flu vaccine Fluzone, which is administered directly into the muscle, and prepared from embryonated chicken eggs. This information is from at
• Triton X-100 (Octylphenol Ethoxylate): This highly effective detergent is well suited as a base ingredient for floor cleaners, detergent sanitizers, and metal cleaners. I don’t want this substance injected in my body.
• Formaldehyde: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency website notes that this colorless gas has been shown to cause cancer in animals and possibly in humans. I can pass on this one, too.
• Thimerosal: This mercury-containing preservative has been used in some vaccines since the 1930s although its use was reduced in 1999 as a precautionary measure by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Public Health Service agencies, and manufacturers. Mercury is the second most toxic material on Earth after radioactive plutonium. The connection between autism and exposure to mercury is still largely debated and studied. This preservative is now mostly found in multi-dose vials.

Oh, and just a side note. On page 6 of the FDA document noted above, it states that a total of 23 deaths were reported during the period Day 29-180 post-vaccination. So according to the CDC, you can die from the flu, but the FDA also admits you can die from the vaccine.

One of the best ways to avoid the flu is to wash your hands regularly and effectively. To properly wash your hands, turn on the water and wet your hands. Turn off the water, apply soap and scrub everywhere– between your fingers, around the nails, on the top of your hands. Sing the ABC song (or Happy Birthday two times) while you’re doing this. Then rinse. Grab a paper towel and use it to turn off the water and to open the door as you leave.

Once you’ve washed your hands, keep them away from your eyes, nose and mouth. You might realize how much you actually touch your face!

Along with good hygiene, be sure to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables, get 30 minutes of exercise daily, reduce stress, get adequate sunshine (the best source of vitamin D), supplement with Omega 3, and avoid or limit your sugar intake as it decreases your immune function. Finally, get a chiropractic adjustment. A minor fall, improper lifting, stress, and repetitive motion all may cause you to need an adjustment—and many times you won’t know it.

It was the 1918-1919 flu pandemic that got the chiropractic profession recognized and helped it to achieve licensing. Nearly 700,000 deaths occurred in the United States alone. New York City statistics indicate that 950 out of every 10,000 people treated by a medical doctor died while only 25 persons out of 10,000 treated by a chiropractor died. People discovered that spinal adjustments truly had a connection to the body’s overall health.

Chiropractic corrects spinal abnormalities, called vertebral subluxations, which result in interference of the nervous system by placing pressure on nerves. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body — including the immune system — chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function.

Remember, the flu vaccine is a multi-billion dollar business for pharmaceuticals. Talk with your doctor and conduct your own research. Be sure to verify the trustworthiness of Internet sources. Two that I recommend include and

As the year-end holidays approach, I will continue eating well, keep my hands clean, exercise, soak up the sun, think positive, and get my regular adjustments to stay healthy.
